Canada — Tariffs, Duties, and Import Taxes
Shipments to Canada may be subject to import duties, goods & services tax (GST), harmonized or provincial sales taxes (HST / PST), and customs clearance fees. These charges are determined by the Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) and, where applicable, provincial revenue authorities. The recipient is responsible for payment of all import-related charges assessed at the time of delivery.
The following guidelines apply to personal import shipments:
Tax Thresholds & Applicability
-
Goods valued at over CAD $20 may be subject to GST and/or HST/PST, regardless of whether duty is assessed.
-
The tax rate charged depends on the province of delivery (GST only, GST+PST, or HST provinces).
-
Taxes are calculated on the declared value of the goods and may also include shipping charges as part of the assessed value.
Taxes are assessed entirely by CBSA and cannot be modified or waived by the shipper.
Duties (Customs Tariffs)
-
Import duty rates vary based on tariff classification (HS code), product composition, country of origin, and trade agreement eligibility.
-
Some products may enter duty-free under trade agreements when origin qualification is properly documented; others may be subject to standard MFN (Most-Favoured-Nation) tariff rates.
-
CBSA may reclassify products at its discretion if it determines a different tariff category applies.
Where duty is assessed, it is collected by the carrier or CBSA before delivery.
Customs Clearance & Brokerage Fees
-
Courier and postal carriers may charge customs processing, brokerage, or disbursement fees in addition to any duties or taxes.
-
These fees are separate from our shipping charges and are the responsibility of the recipient.
Delivery timelines may be extended if a shipment is held for review by CBSA.
Personal Import Quantity Limits
Health-related consumer products imported into Canada are typically limited to:
Shipments exceeding reasonable personal-use quantities may be:
-

-
treated as a commercial import, or
-

Repeated shipments over short intervals may also be reviewed for commercial intent.
Prohibited or Restricted Ingredients
Some products and ingredients may be restricted, require a prescription, or be disallowed for import into Canada. CBSA and Health Canada reserve the right to:
-
detain,
-
refuse entry, or
-
require documentation
for any shipment that does not meet Canadian import or labeling requirements.
