Nonfood Factors

People with wheat allergies need to avoid miscellaneous nonfood items such as cosmetics and medications that contain wheat. Ask manufacturers of these things if they use wheat in their products before you use them.

Is This Diet Vegetarian-Friendly?

Yes. Many whole grains are available that will provide you with the vitamins and minerals you would normally get from wheat.

Eating Out

Call ahead to find out what the restaurant offers. Make sure that you are getting complete answers to your questions. Ask what you can have, instead of what you canít, and understand that most restaurants canít guarantee that your food will be wheat-free, since the chance of contamination in a traditional kitchen is high. Good choices include:

  • Green salads (minus the croutons!) with an oil and vinegar or vinaigrette dressing (note: some vinegars are fermented over a wheat product and must be avoided)
  • Dishes made with rice noodles instead of wheat (make sure there isnít any soy sauce, or textured vegetable protein)
  • Chicken, fish, beef, tofu, and beans if there is no breading or other wheat or flour in the sauce or marinade
